A dictionary or wordbook is a collection of words in a specific language, often listed alphabetically, with usage information, definitions, etymologies, phonetics, pronunciations, and other information; or a book of words in one language with their equivalents in another, also known as a lexicon. According to Nielsen 2008 a dictionary may be regarded as a lexicographical product that is characterised by three significant features: (1) it has been prepared for one or more functions; (2) it contains data that have been selected for the purpose of fulfilling those functions; and (3) its lexicographic structures link and establish relationships between the data so that they can meet the needs of users and fulfil the functions of the dictionary. In many languages, words can appear in many different forms, but only the undeclined or unconjugated form appears as the headword in most dictionaries. Dictionaries are most commonly found in the form of a book, but some newer dictionaries, like StarDict and the New Oxford American Dictionary are dictionary software running on PDAs or computers. There are also many online dictionaries accessible via the Internet. A multi-volume Latin dictionary in the University Library of Graz. From Wikipedia under the

For a word to get entered into the dictionary, it must be normally spoken by basically everyone who speaks English to the point where it can be understood by anybody, and i mean, ANYBODY, on Earth fluent or remotely fluent in English. That's what is requires to put a word in the dictionary as a slang term. As an official word, I have no idea, but it's a LOT harder. My guess would be either 1. A new technology comes out and the name of that machine is entered. 2. A scientist discovers some new species or element. It's name is entered in a scientific dictionary. The only exception to any of these rules are words and phrases created by mashing more than one language together. Because, officially, those two languages are still separate. The longest word in any of the major English language dictionaries is pneumonoultramicroscopics ilicovolcanoconiosis, a word which refers to a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano. Research has discovered that this word was originally a hoax; medically, it is the same as silicosis. It has since been used in a close approximation of its originally intended meaning, lending at least some degree of validity to its claim. The Oxford English Dictionary contains pseudopseudohypoparathyro idism (30 letters). The longest non-technical word in major dictionaries is flocci nauci nihili pili fication at 29 letters.
