Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. —George Santayana Historia (Allegory of History) By Nikolaos Gysis (1892) The Historian By E. Irving Couse (1902)History (from Greek ἱστορία - historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the human past. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present. The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history. Events of the past prior to written record are considered prehistory. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How is historical volatility useful when trading stock options? Q. I guess my real question is: how is historical volatility useful in combination with implied volatility? I realize that implied volatility is important in determining whether or not options are over-priced or under-priced. When I calculate the implied volatility of an option, do I then need to compare it to the option's historical volatility OR do I need to compare the option's implied volatility to what the implied volatility has historically been for that option (thereby not using historical volatility rather historical values of implied volatility)? Learning these two can actually help traders in knowing when and how to invest, thus gaining more profits. One of the most common types of HV is Statistical Volatility, where underlying assets and its value are determined over a definite period or number of days. 'Finite and Adjustable'- these are what SV naturally means, as time averages and momentum regarding options are being considered. As for IV or Implied Volatility, price movements are further identified using varied estimates. Meaning, these estimates refer to the expectations of market traders themselves. The so-called 'bid-ask' estimates are also considered in IV, where buyers and sellers… [cont.] Answered by David L - Tue Sep 29 09:52:32 2009 What are the historical and current issues of the Nile River? Q. My younger brother has an assignment on rivers, and he is looking for information on the historical and current issues of the Nile River but we can't find information. Does anyone know what they are? Or any sites that show these information? Thanks in advance. Asked by Annieee - Mon Nov 26 03:54:45 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. In ancient times, the Egyptians called the desert the "red land", distinguishing it from the flood plain around the Nile River, called the "black land". These colors reflect the fact that the desert sands have a reddish hue and the land around the Nile turned black when the annual flood waters receded. The desert and the Nile River emerged millions of years ago when the ancient sea that covered most of Europe and northern Africa (45 million years ago) shifted, forming the Mediterranean Sea basin. This happened when the earth s plates moved, creating the Himalayas and the Alps. Over thousands of years, the Nile River evolved into its present shape, surrounded by the Eastern and Western deserts. The Upper Nile is divided into three… [cont.] Answered by Antareport - Mon Nov 26 04:07:24 2007 How would our civilization be like now if historical facts had never been recorded for posterity?
Q. I believe that some historical "facts" are possibly incorrect because of the lack of reliable records to sustain its veracity. Jesus is a good example. There are no reliable sources that prove the certainty of Jesus' existence. Roman historians did not mention Jesus at all in their records, but nonetheless Christianity went to become one of the main influences in shaping western civilization. It seems that Christianity was erected on a completely fake foundation. This is a good example of the danger of accepting some historical "facts" as authentic. So, how would our civilization be like now without History? Thanks a lot. Asked by Luis Santos - Sat Feb 21 20:03:08 2009 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. How would the world be without the story of Cyrus II the Great? And then of Alexander the Great? Boring. Uninspiring. These two may have been the greatest of all. I can add to them Ashoka the Great. That is a trio for you AquAzul! The rest has been an imitation, good with the Macedonians, the Romans, and then less and less until now when there is nothing. So, at least History can show us great men. And the great women going with them. Like for instance, we forget about the love mother to son there was between Darius' mother and Alexander the Great. Sisigambis just died after he died. There is so much fun in history, in addition to the events. It also gives us something to study, to say, to debate. It should guide us for the… [cont.] Answered by marysylvie - Sat Feb 21 21:51:36 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "historical" Gr.
