Siddhārtha Gautama (Sanskrit: सिद्धार्थ गौतम; Pali: Siddhattha Gotama) was a spiritual teacher from ancient India who founded Buddhism. In most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha (P. sammāsambuddha, S. samyaksaṃbuddha ) of our age, "Buddha" meaning "awakened one" or "the enlightened one." The time of his birth and death are uncertain: most early 20th-century historians dated his lifetime as c. 563 BCE to 483 BCE; more recently, however, at a specialist symposium on this question, the majority of those scholars who presented definite opinions gave dates within 20 years either side of 400 BCE for the Buddha's death, with others supporting earlier or later dates. Gautama, also known as Śākyamuni or Shakyamuni ("sage of the Shakyas"), is the key figure in Buddhism, and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers. Various collections of teachings attributed to Gautama were passed down by oral tradition, and first committed to writing about 400 years later. He is also a minor figure in other religions: in some Hindu texts, he is described as an avatar of the god Vishnu who attempted to delude beings away from the Vedic religion, and he is regarded as a prophet in the Bahá'í faith. Asked by Holistic Mystic - Sun Jan 4 06:02:23 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Actually, Yellow Rat's answer does not imply Buddha denied the existence. In that dialog, Buddha was teaching the Noble Truth. And yes, you need not concern about this in the Noble truth. Nonetheless, in the conventional truth, one should not deny the existence of heaven as one of the six rebirth destinies. If you read the canon (including Theravada's canon), there are various dialogs between Buddha and heavenly beings (divine beings). Thus, we should not deny their existence, we just need not be concerned about them if liberation is our goal. Note that heaven is not eternal in Buddhism (that is also why Buddha refused to answer in Yellow Rat's quoted dialog because eternal view is a wrong view). He detached his earthly possessions and attachments to find a way to end the cycle of birth, old age, sickness, and death. When he detached from his desires and attachments, and meditated in deep investigation of the nature of all this existence, without distractions of earthly diversions, his single-mindedness led to his enlightenment. Upon enlightenment, he was called a "buddha". He was then recognized as "Shakyamuni Buddha" "Shakya" was the name of Siddhartha's clan and bloodline. "Muni" means 'sage'. So he was recognized as a great sage identified from the Shakya clan. Hence, he was called Shakyamuni Buddha. Answered by Greg L - Sun Jun 22 06:36:02 2008 What is the connection between Buddha and Laughing Buddha?
Q. I know that Buddha is the one who gave up his rich life for an ascetic one after seeing the suffering around him. He is the one from Nepal and founded Buddhism. However, who is Laughing Buddha? I know that he is Chinese, but is he related to Gautama Buddha in any way? Please explain. Asked by Calculator - Tue May 18 06:38:16 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. The two are related in their base of Buddhism as the word "Buddha" means the awakened one. Some 2,500 years ago, Siddhartha Gautama, a prince of the royal Shakya Clan of Nepal, meditated under the bodhi tree (a type of fig tree) in the Indian town of Bodh Gaya (in eastern India) and attained enlightenment. "Buddha" is the title Siddhartha was known by after his enlightenment. The image of the Laughing Buddha is based on a wandering Chinese monk, Budai (Hotei, in Japanese) who lived centuries ago and is believed to be Maitreya, or the Buddha to come. The statue s plump figure and benign countenance suggest contentment, magnanimity and plenitude. Folklore has it that rubbing his pot belly brings good fortune and wealth. Answered by Sahil - Wed May 19 09:27:01 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "gautama buddha" Gautama Buddha (c. 563 - c. 483 BC) was a philosopher, teacher, and religious leader. "Buddha", meaning "awakened one" or "enlightened one" is a title, not a name; the Shakyamuni Buddha, whose original name was Siddhartha Gautama, was the founder of Buddhism.
